In Rail transport freight trains
are used to move the goods from one place to
another place. The freight train or goods train is a collection
of freight cars or goods railway wagons hauled
by a steam engine on railways. It eventually moving cargo goods
between two points as part of the logistics chain. The freight
trains can haul large intermodal containers or
specialized cars or dedicated cars.
Rail freight transport is more
economic and energy efficient than road
transport, particularly when transmitted in bulk or over long
distances. Rail freight is often subject to transshipment
costs while it should be transported from one mode to another
in the chain. These expenses can dominate and practices such as
containerization aim at minimizing these. Bulk
is less susceptible, with distances down to thirty kilometers
or twenty miles enough to cover transshipment costs. Freight trains
are less flexible than road transport, and lot of freights has
been moved from rail to road or sea.
The manufactured goods are transported conventional
with boxcars in US or enclosed freight wagons
in UIC and UK where the goods was manually loaded and unloaded
off the railway wagon. In 1960s containerization has made this
additional level of labour intense work needless whereas the containers
should be moved onto or off the wagons through cranes.
The content in the container remains stable from sender to receiver.
Containers let simple change of mode from road and sea and rail.
Intermodal freight systems
helping the road transport frequently to transport road wheels
with the cargo. In some countries rolling highway trains
are used, trucks can drive directly on the train and drive off
again when the end destination is reached. A system like this
is used on the Channel subway between United Kingdom and France.
In other countries, the tractor part of every truck is not transported
only the trailer is transported on the train. Piggy back
trains are the highest increasing type of freight trains
in the United States, which are also known as trailer on level
car or TOFC trains. There are also roadrailer vehicles
which contain two sets of wheels in train or in trailer
of road vehicle.
There are also several kinds of wagon such as
low loader wagons, for moving road vehicles there
are refrigerator vans for moving food, simple
kinds of open topped wagons for transporting
minerals and large stuff such as coal,
and tankers for transporting liquids
and gases. The majority of coal and
aggregates are moved in hopper wagons that can
be filled up and discharged quickly to allow competent usage of
the resources.
