Spain air traffic controllers dropped strike plan

August 11th, 2010

Spain air traffic controllers dropped strike plan for august and announced they not desire to depress the country tourism industry.

Approximately 300,000 British tourists are in Spain to have their holidays ruined following the breakdown of negotiations over pay and working conditions on Friday. After an objection from Spain tourist industry and negative response from International Air Transport Association or IATA the UNSCA union promised to postpone the strike.

Spain tourism industry was knocked hard by recession and many Britons will holiday this summer and overall visitor numbers have decreased significantly the third year. The union understands the concerns of the tourism sector and passengers said in a report by UNSCA spokesman Cesar Cabo.

The doubt over chance of strikes already hurt last minute bookings, which are lower than expected. But tourism and airline executives feared tourist numbers could fall further after talks with Spain airport authority AENA broke down last week. Many tourists already looked at canceling or postponing their trips.

We would have liked the decision to be definitive and not just for the month of August said in a report by Juan Ignacio Lema, AENA chairman. Lema added that AENA was satisfied with decision and would continue discussion with USCA with aim of getting a contract as soon as possible.

IATA announced that industrial action would threaten Spain weak upturn. This is not the time for strikes said in a report by Giovanni Bisignani Director General of IATA. The settlement is fair, open and objective the variation between AENA and air traffic controllers.
