High Battery Powered Electric Cars For 2010

Present be a number of new Electric Cars for 2010 coming to participate in a new growing auto market. Electric vehicles are no jokes today as automakers compete in a new industry never previous to see. Electric plug-in automobiles are advancing from concept designs into production within just two years. Moreover, some automobiles still offer a hybrid tax credit. Besides, the environment can benefit because of technologies that can lower carbon emissions.

Plug in electric automobiles is the direction which the auto industry is heading, to provide better fuel efficiency and cleaner energy. The Toyota Prius, Ford Fusion, Honda Insight, and the Chevy Volt are some of the latest models. The Honda Civic Hybrid will be available in 2010 as General Motors releases its Chevy Volt debut.

The latest Prius commercial suggests that future vehicles will be more cleaner while hybrid batteries are recycled. New technologies are providing more mileage that can save money at the pump while reducing our foreign oil dependency. Automakers are also producing new electric hybrids that can offer zero tailpipe emissions.

Electric cars were once a myth and the only time we saw one was from a cartoon or a science-fiction movie. Ten years ago it was laughable to think that an automobile could actually plug-in and refuel itself from home. We can now say that plug in solutions that can recharge vehicles will soon become a way of life.

Most of the auto mover are betting everything on future electric transportation, which is the case with General Motors. The automaker stands firm on its promise to deliver vehicles that can drive up to 230 miles per gallon. GM is making a transition from conventional automobiles to green vehicles.

Next year is going to be an incredible time in history more electric cars will be available on the market. Most electric plug-in vehicles can travel anywhere between 40 to 50 miles on a single battery charge. This is the current goal to power an automobile with a battery that can achieve those distances, while emitting fewer carbon emissions.

Hybrid vehicles are advancing as fast as computers did during the mid-1980s. The next challenge for automakers is to design a plug-less vehicle. A few automakers are now developing new electric cars, which use magnetic and anti-gravity technologies.

Perhaps during the next 25 years, scientists and engineers will develop ways for vehicles to travel without the need of electricity or batteries. The electric cars of tomorrow might even use the Earth's gravitational pull to travel. This is a technology that we probably won't see in electric cars next year, but it could soon be near.

2010 Lexus RX 350

The RX was one of the first crossovers and arguably the first luxury crossover when it was introduced for 1998. Since then it's become the long-time bestseller for the brand, and it's easy to see why. The 2010 Lexus RX 350 is nearly as practical as a minivan and more fuel-efficient than an old-style SUV, yet serenely refined, with enough luxury features to feel a little indulgent.

But at the same time the RX has become, in some places, ubiquitous.

From the outside, those who aren't RX owners or habitual automotive Web site visitors probably aren't going to notice the difference between the previous second-generation RX and the redesigned 2010 model. RX 350s are still a dime a dozen in the parking lots of upscale malls. But the new model does change significantly on the inside. The instrument panel is much more interesting to look at, with broad arcs and curved panels that distance the RX from minivans or more affordable, non-luxury-brand crossovers.

At the front of the center console and next to the driver is the new Remote Touch controller-a cross between joystick and trackball-that controls screen-based menus and features. The screen seemed quite far away, but we appreciated the broad hood over it, which kept reflections from ever being an issue. Although the menus aren't that much easier than in other screen-based systems like BMW's iDrive or Mercedes-Benz's COMAND, we found the controller less distracting than others that needed to be rotated or those that provided haptic feedback.

Lexus has boosted power from the 3.5-liter V-6 in the 2010 RX 350 to 275 hp, up from 270, and mated it to a new six-speed automatic. Shifts during light and moderate acceleration are seamless and almost impossible to detect without listening for them or watching the tach; we also liked the softer, more linear throttle calibration which gives takeoffs a more precise, luxurious feel. EPA fuel economy ratings stand at 18 mpg city, 24 highway,The 2010 RX 350 includes a green 'Eco' light in the instrument cluster, but it proved more of an annoyance than an aid. We wondered if the calibration was wrong, as you could still accelerate at what we felt was a moderate pace and it would just stay illuminated the whole time. Only in jackrabbit starts it would go off for a short time.

The driving experience is, to put it bluntly: very numb. Admittedly, many RX buyers will be looking for exactly that. Even with the available Sport Package, which our RX was equipped with (including a sport-tuned suspension), it's capable in corners but by no means eager.

Over several days and about 100 miles of driving, we averaged about 17 mpg overall in the RX 350,

Our test RX 350 had all-wheel drive; for 2010 it's a new adaptive torque split system that sends all torque to the front wheels except when starting up from a stop or when the traction is needed in back. Compared to last year's system it doesn't create nearly as much driveline drag, which should also go to help improve fuel economy overall. And though the RX isn't built for off-roading, the AWD system has a diff lock mode that might come in handy in deep snow, sand, or mud.

Seating and seating space were the subject of many small gripes throughout the week we had the RX. The heated and ventilated seats were upholstered in a nice albeit slightly plasticky leather, but their cushions were on the short side. The hard, contoured headrests, when down, dug into shoulder blades but when up tilted this driver's head uncomfortably forward. Otherwise, the RX is surprisingly short of headroom in the front seats. With the seat bottom adjusted all the way downward, taller drivers will skim the headliner beside the moonroof. Visibility is good outward, thanks to a rather low beltline, but rearward visibility is still impaired by the thick rear pillar and an issue when changing lanes.

When he originally tested the 2010 RX 350, editor Marty Padgett noted more engine noise than in previous versions. Though this tester noticed the engine more than before, it seems road noise and wind noise are even better isolated this time around-so that might be why.

Adding about ten grand to the $38,200 base price, our RX 350 got extras like bi-xenon headlamps, adaptive front lighting, rain-sensing wipers, heated and ventilated seats, the moonroof, power heated mirrors, a premium sound system, and the navigation system with XM NavTraffic and NavWeather. The available heads-up display is also well worth getting; it projects current speed onto the windshield, along with turn-by-turn navigation instructions.

Close to $50k, there are lots of other choices, including the Lincoln MKX, the Audi Q7, and the new, lower-priced 2010 Cadillac SRX. Shoppers might also consider the hybrid Lexus RX 450 h, which gets 32 mpg in city driving and starts at $41,660.

If it isn't abundantly clear, the 2010 RX 350 is both a vehicle that isolates you and yours from the outside world and makes the driving experience seemingly as uninvolved as possible. To many shoppers, that makes it very appealing.

Toyota iQ city car gets a makeover

The Toyota iQ city car has had a makeover for its appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The diminutive four-seater, which is less than 3m long and has been on sale in Britain since the beginning of this year, first appeared at the Frankfurt show two years ago as a pre-production concept car.

The new iQ Collection concept features a fully-glazed roof, pearlescent white colour inside and out. Also on show at Frankfurt was a version of the iQ with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, illuminated door handles and a 10-inch LCD screen that can play DVDs.

According to Toyota, the concept cars prove that 'sub-100g/km motoring doesn't have to be dull'.

Micro-sized petrol cars

The Naro is a petrol-powered prototype car that is even smaller than the iQ and illustrates a possible future direction for conventionally-powered vehicles.

It is perhaps best described as a car/motorcycle hybrid because its driver and passenger sit one behind the other and the vehicle move leans through corners.

In common with only the smallest and most fuel-efficient commuter motorcycles, the 400cc Naro is expected to deliver 100 miles per gallon - better even that the diesel-powered Smart ForTwo CDI, which manages an impressive 85.6 mpg.

The Naro design uses less than half the fuel of a conventional car and occupies a third of the road space.

A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) said: "It is vital that cars become more efficient, but the market moves slowly and without robust environmental controls, vehicles like the Naro are still some way off - one day the commuters who would use a scooter but for concerns about safety and weather protection will be potential customers for vehicles like this."
Hybrid technology vs petrol only

Hybrid technology currently offers a more practical alternative to electric-only vehicles moving. Such vehicles look set to become more common a sight on the roads after Chinese company, BYD recently launched the world's first massed-produced, plug-in hybrid car.

2010 Ford Fiesta

Previous to the original Ford Fiesta debuted in 1976, here be more than 50 potential names used for it, including the Tempo. However, CEO Henry Ford II decided the perky little runabout would be called the Fiesta. Since that first car rolled off the assembly line, Ford has sold more than 12 million worldwide.

The sixth-generation Fiesta shares its platform with the highly respected Mazda2 (another small car expected to come to Canada). The five-door hatchback tested here - a European model - showcases the idea that small cars can be premium in nature. Only BMW's Mini has managed to push this notion with any success on this side of the pond. The list of creature comforts in the tester ran the gamut from rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, leather seats, automatic climate control, cruise control, keyless ignition with push-button start and power windows, locks and mirrors to a decent audio system complete with iPod and USB inputs. This level of equipment is expected in something like Ford's mid-sized Fusion and not an entry-level offering. As such, expect a toned-down model when the Fiesta lands in Canada next year.

The rest of the Fiesta's cabin is finished in a manner that is also beyond the entry-level norm. The materials are rich and the fit and finish is up there with that of more expensive cars. The interior highlight, however, is the centre stack. It is designed in such a way that all the buttons fall within a single hand span yet are large enough to operate when wearing gloves. Pushing one of the main function buttons brings up the chosen command on a small screen that sits atop the stack. It is a clever setup that's a snap to master and equally easy to use. Many of the menu items can also be accessed through voice control. This last also allows a cellphone to be paired for hands-free operation. The Fiesta boasts plenty of flexibility and a surprising amount of space.

The car's 2,490-millimetre wheelbase yields a maximum cargo volume of 34.5 cubic feet. The lone issue is that when the 60/40-split rear seat is folded, it sits above the trunk floor by about 100 mm. Ultimately, it is more of an inconvenience than a real problem - larger boxes sit on the trailing edge of the seat back where they tend to wobble. On a more positive note, the rear seats are finished with a steel backing plate, which prevents heavy cargo from crashing through the cushion in the event of a rear-ender.

The European model's 1.6-litre gasoline engine, complete with variable valve timing, is no slouch. It puts out 118 horsepower (12 hp more than what the Toyota Yaris delivers) and 112 pound-feet of torque. This isn't exactly the stuff of drag racing lore, but it's plenty in this application. The idle is smooth and the engine retains its composure when revved to redline. When teamed with a five-speed manual (a four-speed automatic will be optional), performance is pretty good. There is ample snap off the line and decent mid-range pull, and a snappy downshift makes passing slower vehicles painless. It takes about 10 seconds to reach 100 kilometres an hour and 7.1seconds to complete the 80-to-120-km/h passing move in third gear.

Where the Fiesta truly surprises is the manner in which it handles. While the setup of the front struts and rear twist beam is fairly basic, the suspension delivers better than average road manners. On the ride side, the built-in compliance smoothes the passage along a less than smooth highway.

On the flip side, the impish Fiesta has a go-kart-like feel to it when driven quickly. Yes, there is some body roll and understeer is not too difficult to induce despite the P195/45R16 tires, but when coursing through a looping on-ramp, the Fiesta is remarkably poised for a small car. A neighbour who works at Ford assured me the Fiesta coming to Canada next year will retain the current suspension calibration. Any softening of the suspenders will ultimately detract from the fun of the drive.

Response to steering input is both fast and refined. The latter is somewhat rare as the Fiesta uses an electrically assisted system. Normally, electric assist imparts little in the way of feel or feedback. In the Fiesta's case, the steering is light at slow speeds and pleasantly firm at highway speeds.

The fact the steering wheel has a hand-filling quality is the defining touch. At the launch of the European Fiesta, I came away very impressed by how far Ford had pushed the entry-level envelope. Revisiting the car on Canadian soil reinforced this first impression. When the Fiesta is teamed with the next-generation Focus (finally, North America will get the latest European model instead of the lacklustre version currently parked in many Canadian driveways), Ford will have a formidable one-two punch.

BMW Group Bringing Three New Crossovers To U.S.

2011 BMW X1

BMW is planning an onslaught of new model releases over the next 12 to 18 months, with everything from hybrids to crossovers to possibly even a brand new mid-engined sports car all thought to be in the works. Some of the models confirmed for launch include the new 2010 5-Series GT, 2010 ActiveHybrid 7 and 2010 ActiveHybrid X6, as well as the compact X1 crossover.

2010 5-Series GT:

In late 2007 BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer revealed plans for several all-new models including a design study called the Progressive Activity Sedan (PAS). Then, at March's Geneva Motor Show, BMW gave us the first tangible evidence of the new PAS in the form of the 5-series Gran Turismo (GT) concept vehicle. Today the wraps have come off the production version of the car, which is set to go on sale in Europe this October and in the U.S. early next year.

2010 ActiveHybrid 7:

Hot on the heels of the ActiveHybrid X6 revealed yesterday, BMW has announced the production version of the all-new ActiveHybrid 7 sedan, which will also premiere at next month’s Frankfurt Automover Show. Combining twin-turbocharging and direct-injection technologies with a 3-phase synchronous electric motor powered by lithium-ion batteries, the ActiveHybrid 7 manages to churn out 455 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque and sends this all through a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission.

2010 ActiveHybrid X6:

Unlike the mainstream market where hybrid technology is used to maximize fuel efficiency, luxury carmakers have employed hybrid systems as a way to maintain or improve performance while making concessions to efficiency. The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid, on display at the 2009 Frankfurt Automover Show this week and due out for retail sale this fall, is a prime example.

Rated at a combined output of 480 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque, the big SUV uses a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine and a nickel-metal hydride hybrid powerpack to claim the title of the world's most powerful gasoline-electric hybrid passenger vehicle moving. That's no mean feat, with contenders like Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and Cadillac in the space.

However, soon after their respective releases, we'll see a brand new crossover model from Mini and a redesigned X3.

The X1 is to be positioned as a niche vehicle in the U.S. when it arrives late next year as a 2011 model. According to BMW's U.S. chief Jim O'Donnell, the success of the vehicle will depend "a lot on the price of gas".

While overseas the compact crossover will be available with four-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines, U.S. models will only feature a six-cylinder gasoline engine in either front- or all-wheel drive configurations.

Pricing will be set high for the segment--you can blame the weak dollar against the euro and anticipated strong demand in Europe.

Coming in early 2011 will be a brand new crossover model from Mini. No name has been picked for the vehicle but we do know that both front- and all-wheel drive versions will be available. Pricing for the base Cooper version with front-wheel drive is expected to start at around $29,000, while the range-topping Cooper S with all-wheel drive should be priced somewhere around the $34,000 mark

Finally, BMW will bring in a replacement for the X3. Due in early 2011 as a 2012 model, the new X3 will be built at the automaker's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina and should be slightly larger than the current model. Key rivals include the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLK.

Significant Frankfurt debuts in 5 words or less (again)

Marussia B2 (above): Russia's second super-looking supercar.

Here's round three. Now, to fully understand what we're doing here you'll want to go to parts one and two (you know, just to catch up). You may notice that dominating round three are high-end sports cars, with one biggie missing: the Lamborghini. Why isn't the Reventón on the list? Well, frankly, because it isn't significant. "Less than 20" people will get one, drive it, and then (probably in the near future) try to sell it for a dandy profit. Whereas the R8 Spyder (below) looks relatively different than its hard-top sibling, the Lambo doesn't.

Marussia B1: Those silly Russians, making waves.

BMW, Audi or Ferrari will glow at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2009 yet green is the highlight of the event

Photobucket

The world largest auto show, distinguished by its large size of displays spread out over almost 10 halls, the "Frankfurt Motor Show" opened its doors to the large public on September 17, and will last until September 27; promising to present 82 world premieres, most importantly electric and hybrid models that will be in the spotlight of this year.

The biennially international motor show the Frankfurt Motor Show with this year's motto "A Moving Experience", will have many things to offer to its visitors, but as usual it will be dominated by German manufacturers like Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche that seize the opportunity to launch new models; yet occasionally some U.S. or Japanese debuts occur.

After it was hit hard by the worst crisis in decades that led to the bankruptcy of big names such as General Motors and Chrysler, the auto industry may prove throughout the Frankfurt Motor Show that it may be improving. The continuous growth in sales in the last three months restored major car manufacturers confidence, therefore the German financial capital that hosts the exhibition will see no less than 82 world premieres.

Even if car sales are still low, the concentration on the new trend in worldwide markets determined many manufactures to start concentrating on innovative new electric vehicles and fuel-saving technology. Yet, falling prices and overproduction still weigh on manufactures that face the risk of not surviving this crisis, which might extend until late next year.

All eyes will be on the new BMW Vision considered the star of the show, which will be BMW first-ever production of hybrids. Volkswagen will display the less fuel consuming BlueMotion version of its Golf and Polo models, while Citroen prepared an update of its C3 urban auto, as for GM subsidiary Opel it will be unveiling its Ampera, and Mercedes-Benz will reveal its Hybrid model Vision S500 Plug-In. The Japanese manufacturer and the world's leading automaker Toyota will continue focusing on hybrid electric and petrol cars as well as its Lexus.

Luxury and glamour must always be part of the Frankfurt Motor Show, where Audi will roll out its latest supercar the R8 Spyder, while Ferrari will be present with its 458 Italia, an eight-cylinder successor to the F430; the show will also include the debut of the four-door Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche's new Panamera as well as the Bugatti Veyrons that might top 1 million dollars. Rolls-Royce will be unveiling its new car, the Ghost, with a price tag of around 330,000 dollars.

2010 Lexus LS 600h, LS 600hL unveiled at Frankfurt

Lexus have unveil its full fusion flagship, the LS 600h, at Frankfurt overnight with the car boasting a variety of technological and styling improvements for the 2010 model year.

Redesigned spaces, modernized tools levels, a new ECO driving mode and revised brakes see the LS 600h, and long wheelbase LS 600hL, achieve advances in both comfort and driving dynamics.

ECO mode aims to modify throttle action and the performance of the air-conditioning system to support fuel-efficient driving, in much the same way as the system featured in Toyota's new Prius.

Repackaging of the full hybrid system's battery into two sections of six and 14 modules has reduced its overall size and freed up more luggage space in the boot. Reducing the size of the rear air conditioning unit has increased boot capacity by approximately 35 litres.

The Hybrid Drive system has also been revised to meet strict new Euro V exhaust emissions standards, but with no change to the car's performance: the combination of the 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine and 165kW electric motor produces a maximum 327kW and 520Nm of torque, giving 0-100km/h acceleration in 6.3 seconds. CO2 emissions are 219g/km and combined cycle fuel economy remains at 7.7 litres per 100km.

The LS 600h is newly equipped with larger, 380mm ventilated front disc brakes with six-piston callipers, rotors and pads developed jointly with specialist manufacturer Brembo. The pads are designed for quieter performance with less vibration and give fade-free high-speed stopping power.

Outside the revised model is distinguished visually by a new four-bar grille and front bumper with redesigned air intakes and foglamps. The headlamps have a new running light design and are finished in Lexus hybrid blue, giving the car a distinctive appearance over its conventionally powered siblings.

In profile, the car has a new one-piece rocker moulding and new door mirrors that incorporate twin LED turn signals and puddle lamps, with chrome highlights.

The cabin houses a revised instrument binnacle featuring a new, full colour TFT LCD display while a new instrument panel design features a three-ring analogue dial with a central speedometer, a tachometer and coolant temperature gauge to the left, and a fuel gauge and hybrid system indicator to the right. The display in the centre of the speedo can be customised to show vehicle information, turn-by-turn navigation instructions and hybrid system status.

The range of interior colour and trim combinations includes a new light grey semi-aniline leather upholstery. Both front seats are equipped with new, inflator operated active headrests. Activated by a signal from the airbag ECU in the event of a rear impact, the inflator slides a piston into the headrest, unlocking a mechanism that projects the headrest forwards and upwards, reducing the risk of whiplash injury.

The driver's seat also has a new return/away function. Linked to a similar function that moves the steering wheel, this automatically slides the seat back by up to 50mm when the driver unbuckles the seatbelt and turns the engine off. The seat returns to its selected driving position once the car is started again. For the new model year the LS 600h is available with the Lexus Rear Seat Relaxation Pack for the first time in conjunction with a five-seat configuration.

In common with its sister Lexus models, the LS 600h is adopting a new hard disc drive (HDD) navigation system with the 40GB capacity. The 19-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound System fitted as standard in the LS 600h gives 7.1-channel surround sound on selected CDs and DVDs. It is now DAB ready (DAB audio will be available as a centre-fitted accessory) and provides USB and audio jack plug connection for fully controlled use of portable music players, and Bluetooth with an audio streaming function.

It also provides a new " library", using the navigation system's HDD to transfer and store music files from CD up to 10GB capacity – the equivalent of about 2,000 songs.

Road Test: 2010 Jaguar XK Portfolio

The tweak and customized XK still have the looks to variety envy among the proletariat. And, for 2010, it has the commodities under the hood to back up its speedy persona. Replacing the aged, 300-horsepower, 4.2-litre V8 is a new 5.0L V8 that develops a substantial 385 hp, which is enough to imbue the weighty cat (2,080 kilograms) with a decent turn of speed - zero to 100 kilometres an hour takes only 5.5 seconds. Should that not prove quick enough, a supercharged version of the same engine pumps out 510 hp in the XKR version.

While more power is always good in a high-end sports car - the base Portfolio has a suggested retail price of $96,500 - fuel economy is comparable to that of the previous XK despite the significant increase in performance, and emissions are better.

In its fortified form - the Portfolio is only 35 hp in arrears of last year's XKR - the 2+2 can be as docile or as playful as you want, depending on the amount of throttle. It made for a delightful highway cruiser for two (the back seats are close to useless), blending in with the flow of traffic, with just a slight increase in foot pressure needed to get around slower-

moving vehicles. Despite its bulk, the XK's handling dynamics are equal to the engine, well communicating road conditions to the driver and displaying a steady and quick line when tracking through corners and on-ramps.

I'm somewhat bemused by the XK's Jaguar Drive Selector, which rises majestically from the centre console once the engine is started. The rotary knob makes gear selection a cinch, but it seems a tad silly and needlessly complicated after the novelty wears off. A conventional

selector for the six-speed manumatic would do just fine. The counterpoint is that the selector is far more preferable to the accursed J-gate that

afflicted past Jaguar models. And there are paddle shifters for those with the need to play Speed Racer.

Formerly owned by Ford, Jaguar is now under the auspices of Indian automaker Tata. From what I can see, the brand is in good hands. The XK remains quintessentially British and forever desirable.

2009 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Concept

Toyota introduced a new Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Concept at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show. Introduction of the new concept comes ahead of a test program that will spot more than 500 cars leased to customers worldwide for real-world assessment of performance and checking driver attitudes and experiences.

Using lithium-ion batteries, the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid provides clean, fuel-efficient electric-powered running in urban areas for longer distances and at higher speeds than the conventional, third generation full hybrid Toyota Prius. Over longer distances, or when the limit of battery power is reached, the system automatically shifts to conventional petrol power.

The concept model is a development of the new, third generation Prius, and builds on the core technology of Hybrid Synergy Drive specifically to meet the needs of urban motorists. It is a full hybrid vehicle in which both the electric motor and petrol engine can drive the wheels. A fully electric EV mode is used for shorter distances, while the petrol engine provides a true long-range capability.

Toyota also attained a compact and practical packaging design for the battery pack. Toyota Prius Plug-in can be also be quickly recharged, from a conventional household electricity point, or a public charging post. The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Concept is similar in format to the Hybrid Synergy Drive used in the new Prius, but with the nickel-metal hydride battery pack replaced by a new, high-output lithium-ion battery.

The battery is more compact and has a higher volumetric energy density, so it does not compromise vehicle weight and packaging. Perhaps more importantly, it can be recharged much more quickly than the nickel-metal hydride type: the battery in the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid can be fully recharged in 1.5 hours from a 230v power supply.

The battery allows strong, seamless acceleration up to a maximum 100km/h in EV mode. On a full charge, it can cover approximately 20km in EV mode, six miles further than the nickel-metal hydride battery in the latest Prius model. Over longer distances, the car operates as a regular full hybrid.

The extended EV capability brings CO2 emissions down to around 60g/km. Even greater CO2 savings can also be gained if the electricity used to charge the battery is drawn from renewable sources, such as windmills and solar panels. Simply put, lower the percentage of energy derived from fossil fuels, better the car's well-to-wheel performance.

The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Concept is comfortable, convenient and practical as the latest generation Toyota Prius. In its sister model, the air conditioning can be activated remotely, when the vehicle is plugged, enabling the cabin to be brought to the right temperature before setting off.

To help drivers maximise the benefits of driving in EV mode, it is equipped with a Hybrid System Indicator, which includes information on the EV driving range, based on the level of battery charge. An engine starting point display has also been added to emphasise the increase in EV driving range.

2009 Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid Concept at Frankfurt

Mercedes-Benz will show off its new Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid Concept at the 63rd IAA in Frankfurt. Not long after the successful launch of Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid, Mercedes-Benz will show a new concept called the Vision S500 HYBRID, a plug-in hybrid version of the large luxury sedan with gasoline engine.

The Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid Concept can drive for up to 18 miles solely on electric drive without any local emissions. The efficient drive system combined with CO2 plus for the battery-electric driving mode enables the vehicle to achieve a certified consumption of only 3.2 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers. With CO2 emissions of only 74 grams per kilometre in the New European Driving Cycle, the experimental vehicle developed in Sindelfingen demonstrates the long-term viability of future Mercedes-Benz.

"The Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is a new milestone on our path toward zero-emission mobility," says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. "It is a luxurious and safe S Class that offers superior driving performance while at the same time consuming less fuel than current compacts. All of this shows that our top models will also be able to combine automotive fascination with responsibility for the environment."

The Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid Concept has all of the powers of the Mercedes-Benz .
  • Powerful V6 gasoline engine with a next-generation direct injection system.
  • 44 kW/60 hp Hybrid module.
  • Lithium-ion battery with more than 10 kWh of storage.

The Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid Concept accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 5.4 seconds with fuel economy expected at 3.2L/100km emitting 74 grams of CO2/100km. 'Although it will take some time before this model can go into series production, our engineers will be working full steam to carry out the necessary integration measures and ensure that all components can meet the tough everyday demands required of a long-distance luxury saloon,’ says Dr. Thomas Weber, who is a member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for R&D at Mercedes-Benz.

‘We have already got all the key equipment we need for such a dream car, which is why I see it being integrated in the next generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The important thing now is that our development work be accompanied by the establishment of a full-coverage infrastructure that will allow the potential of this pioneering drive system to be fully exploited,’ adds Dr. Thomas Weber.

The design of Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is mostly same as that for the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid. One system-specific attribute is the existence of an extra clutch included between the combustion engine and the electric motor. This mechanism decouples the two components in electric drive mode, thereby ensuring highest level of efficiency. It is fully integrated into the vehicle's converter housing, so the clutch does not take up any additional space.

The system employed in the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid, the Hybrid module in the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid Concept also comes with the ECO start/stop function. This feature enhances safety driving, which has electric motor providing great sustain to the combustion engine during the high consumption acceleration phase. This system has already confirmed its capability in different pattern in Mercedes Benz Sprinter.

The difference between the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid and conventional hybrids involves the plug-in battery, which can be charged at charging stations, thereby enabling the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid to travel up to 18 miles on electric power. The quick charge cycle takes less than 1 hour with a charging capacity of 20 kW. A standard charge cycle at a conventional household socket with 3.3 kW takes about 4.5 hours to charge a completely discharged battery.

The weight of the electrical components in the current experimental vehicle is 474 pounds, in that lithium-ion battery weighs about 286 pounds. The vehicle's Hybrid module also provides additional energy when car is in motion through regenerative braking.

BAIC's Saab involvement raises few eyebrows

In most small countries, word that both of its two flagship car brands were poised to get new Chinese owners would probably cause an outcry.

But in Sweden, Wednesday's reaction to word that China's Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co had agreed to become an investor in General Motor's Saab barely raised a shrug. This followed close on the heels of news that China's Geely Automover was the only confirmed bidder for Volvo, which Ford Motor is considering selling.

Asked for her reaction Maud Olofsson, Sweden's enterprise and energy minister, told the Financial Times that the ownership of Saab "is not a business for the Swedish government".

A government spokesman went further, saying BAIC's involvement could be good if it helped Saab – which sold only 98,000 cars worldwide last year – break into one of the world's largest car markets. "If you look at other Swedish companies that have gone into co-operation with Chinese companies, they have worked well," she said.

Labour unions were also relaxed about the deal. Aleksandar Zuza, an official at the IF-Metall union which represents Saab workers, said it was a "good sign" that the Koenigsegg consortium buying Saab had secured additional financing and potential access to the Chinese market.

If anything, the deal could prove more controversial in China than in Sweden. Intense rivalry exists between BAIC and rivals such as Shangai Automotive and First Automobile Works, both of which have joint ventures with GM.

China's government opposes hasty international expansion by its carmakers, which it wants to consolidate into larger companies and improve their vehicle quality before they buy overseas assets. Foreign acquisitions require government approval.

While governments in the US, France, Germany and elsewhere have poured billions of dollars into direct aid or scrappage subsidies to prop up flailing carmakers, Sweden's centre-right government has been tough toward pleas for help from its industry, dominated by GM-owned Saab and Ford's Volvo.

BAIC's agreement with Koenigsegg came after the government refused the Swedish supercar maker's request to provide financing needed to close the purchase of the lossmaking brand from GM. BAIC had looked at Saab after GM's decision to sell it earlier this year, but failed to make a shortlist.

The agreement announced on Wednesday will see Saab's new owners form a joint venture with BAIC to sell and later produce the brand in China. BAIC will probably also use some of Saab's technology in its own cars, a person close to the deal said.

For BAIC, Saab's appeal lies in its knowhow in building models such as the all-new version of its flagship 9-5 sedan due to debut in Frankfurt next week. The brand, headquartered north of Gothenburg, will come with an engineering and design staff of about 1,000 inherited from GM.

"Chinese manufacturers are hoping to buy up technology that will help them catch up to world standards on both the product and the development side more quickly than they would on their own," said Christoph Stuermer, automotive analyst at IHS Global Insight.

Koenigsegg's acquisition of Saab still hinges on the carmaker securing a loan worth c400m-c500m from the European Investment Bank, which requires a Swedish government guarantee. Stockholm has indicated it is willing to offer such a guarantee, but ruled out additional support.

saab car

Geely's bid for Volvo, if successful, could provoke more controversy than a BAIC deal as the Chinese carmaker is seeking 100 per cent control of the much larger carmaker. Some Swedish government officials have expressed reservations amid worries about job losses and intellectual property leakage to China.

Brabus prepare 750HP Mercedes-Benz monster

With the Frankfurt Motor Show only days away it's time for German tuner Brabus to show off something outrageous. What Brabus are unleashing this year is what it claims to be the world's fastest executive luxury sedan. The mean machine is based on the facelifted 2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class and is named the SV12 R Biturbo 750.

The Brabus SV12 R is a car for drivers who feel that the 612-horsepower stock S65 AMG just isn't quick enough. The SV12 R features a 6.3-litre twin-turbo V12 that dishes out 750 horses and a ridiculous 995 lb-ft of torque.

A special crankshaft with longer stroke, forged pistons with a larger diameter and an increased cylinder bore result in a displacement increase from standard 5.5 to now 6.3-liters. The engine is also upgraded with larger turbochargers, an optimised intercooling system and a stainless-steel exhaust system with high-flow catalysts. The ECU also gets retuned to ensure the vehicle meets EURO IV emission regulations.

The end result is a 0-100 kph time of 4.0 seconds flat and a top speed of 340 kph. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a modified five-speed automatic transmission.

Cosmetically a new aero kit is utilised, as are a variety of wheel designs for maximum VIP bling. The car will make its debut later this month at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Britain' s love affair with the Mini continues with two new models

Sex symbol, film star, industrial success story - the Mini occupies a special place in Britain's national consciousness.

As Lord Mandelson said yesterday: "British drivers have had a long love affair with the Mini and I'm sure that this will continue for years to come." Few people would argue with his words, prompted by news from BMW that two new models are to be built at the Mini plant in Oxford.

Of course, what he did not point out was that, like many of the great love affairs, it got off to a rocky start.

When the Mini was introduced in 1959, early sales were so disappointing that production might even have been halted. Somehow it caught on, though, and the car that was originally designed as a utility vehicle for the working classes became the runabout of choice for the smart set and an indelible symbol of the Swinging Sixties.

Who had a Mini? Who did not, more like. Peter Sellers had one, as did Princess Margaret, and the Beatles had one each (customised, of course). Jack Profumo used to drive around in a bright red one - unusual for a government minister - and Christine Keeler claimed that she had sex with him in it, which was even more unusual.

When a Mini won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, its status as a motoring legend was assured and by the time the car appeared in The Italian Job, it had become a global superstar.

Now, 50 years later, our affair with the Mini is still going strong - although, as with any longstanding relationship, it is politic not to draw attention to the various changes that have taken place over the years, such as the new owner and the new design.

But love is blind, especially if it means the best news for the British motor industry in years and the creation of up to 1,000 jobs at Mini's Cowley plant, where 3,700 workers are employed building three versions of the car. The two new models, one of them a coupé, will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 15.

Even Alex Moulton - who designed the suspension of the original car half a century ago and who could be forgiven for regarding the BMW Mini with a certain coolness - welcomed the news. "I am delighted," he said, before going on to describe the current Mini as "well done and well executed ... in a German way".

What it does not have, however, is any of the technical innovation of the original, such as the transverse engine, the front-wheel drive and the rubber suspension, all designed to give maximum space inside. "I once drove a 1959 Mini to Brighton," said Christy Campbell, author of Mini: An Intimate Biography, "and it was absolutely wonderful ... incredibly simple and incredibly clever."

Although it was not a success at first, its fortunes changed when it was taken up by the likes of Anthony Armstrong-Jones, later Lord Snowdon. Soon everyone wanted one. "But it was not just pop stars who bought them, it was Tory ministers," Campbell said. "Ernest Marples [Minister of Transport] had a special one to carry his golf clubs. Princess Alexandra was pursued by the Daily Mail because they wanted to know what was inside her boot."

After production of the Mini classic ended, BMW brought out the Mini: bigger, sportier and absolutely nothing to do with the original. "They bought an English suit of clothes," said Campbell, "and remanufactured it in a humourless, but efficient way."

Does it matter? "No," said Chas Hallett, editor of Autocar, the magazine that once named the original its Car of the Century. "The Mini has been an amazing sales success, even in the States, which is something the original never achieved. There is a sense of fun and verve about it."

Like the new versions of the Fiat 500 and the VW Beetle, nostalgia is an undoubted part of the appeal. "But nostalgia is never enough," Hallett said. "People would not buy it unless it was a thoroughly good product. And it is a good product."

•The record for "Mini cramming" is 21 people, set by a group of students in Malaysia who stayed inside a Mini Cooper for 20 seconds

•More than 30 Minis were used in The Italian Job in 1969. Six were Mini Coopers, the rest regular Minis dressed as Coopers to save money

•The first Mini had an 848cc engine and cost £497 for the basic model, or £538 for the deluxe

•Sir Alec Issigonis, the designer of the Mini, built a version for his friend Enzo Ferrari. He returned it because it was right-hand drive, but after modifications, became quite a fan

•The London and Surrey Mini Owners Club set a record on May 17 this year by driving 1,450 Minis from London to Brighton

•When Lord Snowdon requested a Mini with wind-down windows in 1960, he received a standard car.On inquiry, Issigonis told him that the wind-down windows would have ruined Princess Margaret's hairdo

Toyota, Honda being pummelled in North America

It is one of the largest absurdities of the North American auto industry.

Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. are selling some of the continent’s for the most part popular vehicles, like the Corolla, Civic, Camry and Accord. And yet, they’re posting year-over-year volume numbers that are causing analysts to gasp.

"The world must be coming to an end," industry consultant Dennis DesRosiers said in a note to clients Tuesday in reference to Honda's 25% sales decline in Canada this year and Toyota’s 20% drop, punctuated by another challenging August.

In fact, the Japanese-based automakers are being pummelled by currency, by choice, and by a growing pool of rivals that are pressing hard, industry experts say.

The rise of the Japanese yen in recent months has been the so-called silent killer for the country's carmakers. It has crushed their bottom lines by lowering the revenue they get from automobiles they make in Japan and sell overseas. And it has made it more difficult to offer higher incentives on their products.

At the same time, Honda and Toyota have chosen to stick with a general corporate philosophy of holding the line on pricing in order not to devalue their vehicles. That has sent some recession-weary buyers scrambling to the showrooms of the competition.

"When times are good, when people want to buy your product anyway, the strategy of maintaining price pay off," said Jesse Toprak, vice-president of industry trends for auto research website TrueCar.com. "But when times are not good, then you need to sacrifice somewhat unless you're okay with losing sales. There’s an equilibrium there where Toyota and Honda are trying to figure out where they should land."

Rivals Hyundai and Kia, benefiting from a low Korean won, nearly doubled their incentive spending in the United States this year versus 2008. That has had clear results.

While Japanese automakers overall gained 0.23 points of U.S. market share in the first five months of 2009, holding 38.8% of new vehicle sales, Korean automakers won 2.29 points of share to boost their sales stake to 7.3%, according to brokerage CLSA Pacific Markets. "The Koreans have been taking some of their competitive advantage and spending it on marketing costs, which helps volumes but has less of an impact on profits at this point."

In Canada, Toyota is pursuing a strategy of offering deals on the vehicles it builds here -- a way to boost its local manufacturing output. Honda has said sales of its new Insight hybrid model have been disappointing because gasoline has remained relatively affordable.

Automakers sold 135,351 vehicles in Canada in August, a 7.9% decline from August 2009. "This represents the best back-to-back performance since last October," said Scotiabank analyst Carlos Gomes. He increased his 2009 sales forecast to 1.445 million units from 1.42 million.

U.S. sales benefited from a government cash-for-clunkers program, lifting volumes above year-earlier levels for the first time since October 2007. General Motors Co., which reclaimed its spot as Canada's top vehicle seller from Ford, will build 655,000 vehicles in North America in the fourth quarter, a 20% increase over third quarter output.
