Excise duty on all cars may be loweredr

NEW DELHI: The price is increasing frequent by leading domestic car maker's looks to have triggered thinking about rationalization of excise duties.

The excise sops has announced for small cars in the Budget earlier this year were actually meant to make vehicles of certain dimensions for more affordable consumers.

To set the situation right, the Government is ready to think of lowering excise across all cars, including larger ones such as the sedans.

Retail sales jump in Ontario

Retail sales carry on pushing higher at very healthy pace in Ontario and across Canada, according to a report Statistics Canada.

Ontario retailers did $12.46 billion (Canadian) of business during August. That stated an increase of 6.6 percent from the same month a year ago.

The nationwide profit was even stronger. Retail sales through Canada were up 9.2 percent.

Automobile, IT industries done well in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Automobile and information technology industries in Tamil Nadu state posted an attractive growth in the first six months of 2006-07 but also faced many problems, with inadequate power supply and skilled labor as well.

This was exposed by the bi-annual (April-September) economic survey conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industry, southern region. The two industries grew between 15 and 25 per cent in the first six months compared in their performance in the corresponding period of 2005-06, said a press release.

Ford mulls sale of Automobile Protection Corp

DEARBORN, Mich (AFX) - Ford Motor Company said it is now exploring tactical options for its subsidiary Automobile Protection Corporation (APCO), with special emphasis on a potential sale of the business.

Ford bought APCO in 1999 and this unit offers vehicle service contracts and related after-market products to car dealers.

Automobile sales keeps declining

The nation's automobile sales figures continues to sink for the first nine months of this year, with last month seeing a very drastic decline of more than 40 percent, latest statistics show.

Car sales during the period from January to last month summed at 286,238 units, a 30 percent drop from the same period last year, according to figures released by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.

Last month alone sales fell by 43 percent during last year to only 25,005 units, the statistics showed.

Car sales growth slows after rate hikes

Pretoria - After recent interest rate increases, the strong consumer demand for new cars is now starting to subside, in spite of the fact that new vehicle sales last month had set a record for the month of September.

Tony Twine, a motor industry analyst and director of Econometrics, said yesterday that most of the growth in this market was now left "in the hands of corporate people".

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa) yesterday reported a considerable decline in year-on-year growth in new car and also light commercial vehicle sales last month.

Thailand's automotive exports up 29%

Thailand exported 353,886 auto vehicles during the first eight months of this year, up 29.17 per cent contrasted with the same period in 2005, industry sources said on Wednesday.

Altogether 796,552 vehicles were gathered locally in the January to August period of 2006, of that 442,666 units were sold on the domestic market, up 1.7 per cent year-on-year, said the Federation of Thai Industries' automotive club.

Exports fared better. The 353,886 exported vehicles, typically one-ton pickup trucks, earned Thailand 155.3 billion baht (4.2 billion dollars), up 23.35 per cent.
